We know it can be difficult to cater to all learners and how they access their training. All individuals learn in their own way and at their own pace. Varying work environments can add even more complexity.
In this post, we’ll cover specific options for presenting training to users in different types of job environments, including both formal and on-the-job training. Hopefully this will help you see from your user’s perspective and make your training more engaging to your audience.
Users in a corporate environment may find themselves short of time, running from meeting to meeting. In these cases, content may need to be short and to-the-point so users can fit it into their busy schedules. eLearning courses may be ideal for these users because it gives them flexibility to choose the best time to complete their training.
Another great opportunity for corporate environments is live training. If your users all work in the same office location, you can offer options for instructor-led training and track attendance and results in your LMS.
If your users are geographically dispersed, you can always offer a virtual option, such as a live webinar. You may want to offer learners different days and times to select from so they can determine what best fits their schedule.
Field or Remote
Users that work outdoors or in a remote location may find it hard to take traditional training, especially if they work unconventional hours. It may be hard to get a connection to the Internet or complete trainings in a group setting. In these situations, on-the-job training is typically the best fit.
LMS “Checklists” are designed for hands-on training, such as putting together an engine or identifying the safety hazards on a construction site. Giving your users a list of items to complete on-the-job will help guide them in their training with less interruption to their day. Checklists can be created, tracked and managed in the eSSential LMS so you have a formal record of this type of hands-on training.
eLearning courses are another great option for your remote users. Again, this option gives users the opportunity to complete training on their own schedule or when they are in a more reliable location with Internet connection. Your eLearning courses can be designed to work on a tablet, such as an iPad. These types of students may find it easier to access a mobile device rather than a PC or laptop.
Retail or Restaurant
Users who work in a retail or restaurant environment may have difficulty accessing a computer. There may be limited computers at the work site and employees may be Non-exempt Salaried or Hourly and not able to complete training from home on their own computer. Checklists or instructor-led training may be more practical for these learners. Managers will most likely schedule the employee’s training or organize a group learning session.
Checklists provide users the opportunity to track their hands-on training and any feedback that may be provided by their supervisor or trainer. For example, if you are developing training on making the perfect margarita, then you would design the steps in your checklist and have a trainer or manager provide feedback on the user’s finished product.
If it’s important that your whole team is trained at the same time, then live training sessions are a perfect option. You can use an LMS to schedule the training ahead of time and notify employees of the details. Managers can even select the registrants or have them register on their own. All of the attendance records will then be automatically tracked in the LMS.
Whatever environment your users work in, an LMS is a great tool to provide flexible training that works with your learner’s environment instead of against it. Using your understanding of the different advantages and limitations posed by your learner’s environment will positively impact learner satisfaction – and, ultimately, training results and return on investment.
